About Mauritius

Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, situated off the South-eastern coast of Africa. It has stunning beaches with clear blue waters and coral reefs. The island was first discovered by Arabs in 975, who named it Dina Arobi. The Dutch settled here from 1598 to 1710 and later called it Mauritius. The French took over in 1715 when the Dutch abandoned the island and named it Isle de France. The English later occupied the island until Mauritius declared independence in 1968.
Mauritius was uninhabited for a long time. The Dutch briefly tried to settle but could not survive the epidemics and pest infestation. A majority of the country’s residents are descendants from India who arrived here as slaves to work in the sugarcane fields. Besides Indians, descendants of Chinese labourers, African slaves, and Dutch, French, and English colonists also form part of the country’s population.
Most of the population is concentrated around Port Louis, the capital city. Our Mauritius tour package itinerary includes a combination of natural attractions like coral reefs, beaches, mountains, nature reserves, and botanic gardens, as well as historical sites like Hindu temples, forts, chateaus, and museums.

Today, the country has moved on from its colonial past, rightly acknowledging its indigenous rights and making reconciliation efforts. It is a wealthy nation and ranked the world’s happiest nation among developed economies. It ranks #12 in terms of racial equality and #8 in terms of raising children.

Top Reasons To Visit Mauritius

Mauritius is situated about 900 km off the coast of Madagascar. It is a lovely tropical paradise that fuses cultures and religions as a melting pot. Mauritians are friendly and cordial, blending Africa, India, China, France, and Great Britain’s influences over the years. Here’s why you must select our Mauritius tour packages for your next vacation.

Beaches With Blue Waters

Mauritius is famous for its sun-kissed beaches and translucent lagoons. These shorelines are made up of soft white sand bordered by coconut palms and casuarina trees. The turquoise waters are also perfect for various water sports like swimming, snorkelling, sailing, and kayak rides. Some of the famous beaches include Flic en Flac, Trou aux Biches, Belle Mare, and Ile aux Cerfs. Each of these beaches is unique and interesting. For instance, Belle Mare is ideal for parasailing, undersea walking, and snorkelling, while Poste Lafayette is the best place for kite and windsurfing.

Varied Cultures and Foods

Approximately two-thirds of all citizens in Mauritius are said to be descendants of indentured Indian labourers. But the country also has people with Chinese, African, Dutch, French, and English ancestry. Mauritius is tolerant of all religions temples and mosques co-exist with beautiful colonial-era churches. Mauritian cuisine also reflects this assimilation: popular food here includes dhol puri, diri frir (Chinese fried rice), boulettes (dumplings), rougail, and croissants.

Scenic Mountains, Forests and Nature Reserves

Mauritius’s wildlife is as eye-catching as its beaches with tropical forests and tea plantations on mountain ranges. In Black River Gorges National Park, you’ll find unique plants and animal species like the Mauritius kestrel, echo parakeet, and pink pigeon. For breathtakingly beautiful views, trek through Macchabée-Belle Ombre’s forested parklands or along the cliffs and gorges of the Black River.

Fascinating History and Diverse Cultures

Mauritius’ history is influenced by the Arabs, Dutch, French, English, and descendants of farm labourers from India, China, and Africa. You’ll visit historical colonial mansions, sugarcane plantations, and botanical gardens. The country also celebrates major festivals like Thaipusam Cavadee, the Chinese Spring Festival, Holi, Diwali, the Kreole International Festival, and Christmas.

World-class Resorts and Dining

Mauritius is a luxury holiday destination with world-class resorts and hotels. Mauritius is on par with luxury holiday destinations like Maldives and Bora Bora with idyllic beaches, Michelin-starred restaurants, stylish tropical villas and private islands. But the country offers much more than exquisite villas and A-class hospitality. The country’s rich culture and history is sure to leave people mesmerised.
There are budget accommodations as well as catering to families and backpackers. Some of the best places for fine dining include Quatre Bornes and Flic En Flac.

India’s Easy Access to Mauritius

Mauritius is well connected with major Indian cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Bangalore, through direct flights. Some of the airlines flying to the country include Air Mauritius, Air India, and IndiGo. India is only an hour and a half from Mauritius, so you don’t have to worry about jetlag. On the island, English or Hindi will get you by comfortably. The huge Indian diaspora makes it easy for Indians to get around the country.

Flourishing Offshore Corporate Sector

Mauritius has successfully developed its offshore financial services industry and positioned itself as a safe and stable global business centre. As a result of this buoyant economy, infrastructure, connectivity, amenities, and overall prosperity have been achieved. In per capita terms, Mauritius ranks among Africa’s highest-income countries with good living standards. However, the island’s environment has remained unspoiled despite its economic development. Mauritius provides the best tourism investment trade facilities.

Adventure Sports & Activities

Though often associated with relaxed beach holidays, Mauritius offers many activities for adventure lovers. You can see dolphins, try deep-sea fishing or enjoy a catamaran cruise. Enjoy guided wildlife tours, horseback riding, zip lining, golfing, and more. Most resorts also have diving centres where you can learn scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking, and water skiing

Affordable Luxury

Compared to other luxury beach destinations, Mauritius is quite affordable for an Indian traveller. Go for top hotel brands such as Taj Oberoi Intercontinental, which offers high-end hospitality at competitive tariffs.
There are indulgent beach resort villas and bungalows where one can enjoy a lavish stay without a hole in your pocket. From fine dining to spa pampering, luxury is within reach. At GT Holidays, our Mauritius tour packages include air tickets, meals, and entrance fees for all major tourist attractions, making the entire experience affordable and enjoyable.

The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden

Among the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere, sprawling over 37 hectares, the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden is home to over 650 exotic plant species, including water lilies, spice plants, and over 85 varieties of palms, including the famous talipot palm. Stroll along beautiful canals and fountains with grand royal palms on both sides. The most popular attraction is giant lilies like Victoria Amazonica in a giant lily enclosure. Quinine trees used for treating malaria can also be found there.

Chamarel 7 Coloured Earth Geopark

Located in the Chamarel Valley area, this geo park reveals over 600 million years of history. Spread over 8.5 hectares, the area is home to plenty of natural and cultural sites, including dunes made up of red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow coloured earth. The seven colours formed from the exploding lava that later cooled into basalt. These basaltic lavas underwent further oxidisation, resulting in aluminium and iron oxides that stained the refined basalt with different colours. Some places that are part of the geopark include the Chamarel Waterfalls, Tortoise Park, and Le Café De Chamarel.

Le Morne Brabant

This rugged peninsula on the southwest tip of Mauritius has great significance in Mauritian history. From the late 18th century into the early 19th century, it served as a haven for runaway slaves fleeing from harsh living conditions. In 2008, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can enjoy beautiful views over Le Morne Peninsula and hike up rocky outcrops. Along this journey, you can also see wildlife like green monkeys and soaring kestrels. At the foot of this mountain lies Le Morne Beach- one of Mauritius’ finest beaches.

Eureka Creole House

This is a well-preserved Creole mansion built in the 1830s. The house perfectly showcases the lifestyle of the colonials who lived here as plantation owners. The entire complex includes the main house, outbuildings, a well-manicured garden, and waterfalls. Highlights within the home include its 109 windows and doors, Chinese and British antique furniture pieces, chandeliers, paintings and mosaic floors. You will join a guided tour of the house, sit by the small waterfalls, find endemic plants, or buy souvenirs at the shop within the complex. You can also tour through the dining room, office library and even living quarters with their original furnishings.

Champ de Mars Racecourse

This racecourse in Port Louis was first inaugurated in 1812 and is the second-oldest racecourse in the Southern Hemisphere. It is an integral part of Mauritius’s history as this was the place where Mauritius declared independence in 1968. The racecourse is still in operation today, with the racing season kicking off around late March and continuing until December.

Ganga Talao (Grand Bassin)

The sacred lake Ganga Talao is nestled within an extinct volcano’s crater and holds great spiritual significance for Mauritian Hindus. They believe that this natural lake represents Lord Shiva’s home and replicates the Ganges River. Ganga Talao measures over 600 meters above sea level and has water coming from underground springs. The peaceful shores surrounding this lake are adorned with towering statues of Hindu gods and goddesses. Visitors can offer flowers or fruits to the deities. The place is especially important during Maha Shivratri.

Trou Aux Cerfs Volcano

To see how Mauritius was formed through volcanic activity, you must visit Trou Aux Cerfs near Curepipe town. This dormant volcano has a well-preserved cone and crater that was created by the flowing magma. From the lookout point, you will have panoramic views of the crater, the surrounding landscape, and the nearby towns. You can walk along the trails which take you nearer to the crater. Being part of the Trou Aux Cerfs-Curepipe nature reserve, it is ecologically rich in terms of rare plants and animals.

Gabriel Island

Ile Gabriel lies off Mauritius’ east coast, is appreciated for its stunning scenery, and is linked to the mainland via an isthmus that submerges at high tides. It is a little island covered in mangrove forests growing along white coral beaches and contains giant ebony trees dating back over 300 years. One way to enjoy untouched nature is by walking on the pristine beaches and coastal flats of Gabriel Island. There are also kayaking trips around this place where marine birds such as herons, egrets, and cormorants, among others, are visible within mangroves.

Sega Dance and Music

No trip to Mauritius can be complete without enjoying Sega, a traditional Mauritian music dance style. It comes from African slaves brought to this island in the eighteenth century for their folk songs, drum beats and rhythms. Today, it signifies Creole Mauritian culture characterised by rocking knees sideways movements alongside improvised steps. The shows featuring talented performers and dancers can be seen nationwide, including beach towns on Mauritius Island, especially at the beach towns across Mauritius Island. This could include taking sega dance lessons while vacationing there.
Mauritius offers tourists from India the opportunity to experience ethnic mosaics merged with natural beauty and a blend of cultural sights, natural vistas, and hidden gems that will make their tropical holidays unforgettable.

Best Time To Visit Mauritius

With its beautiful beaches, lively culture and action-packed activities, Mauritius makes an irresistible destination for Indian travellers. Before packing your bags, you must know the best time to visit the place. Here’s a guide to help you choose a suitable Mauritius tour package:

Sunny Getaway: May to December

This is the best time for Indians to visit Mauritius. The weather is mostly sunny and dry, with temperatures around 25°C (77°F), which makes it great for beach-basking, water sports and exploring the island’s natural world.

May – June

As school holidays begin in some countries during these months (mainly because of summer break), there will be fewer crowds on the island, but good weather will persist. This means comfortable temperatures and potentially cheaper flights and stays.

July & August

Winds grow stronger as winter approaches, causing cooler temperatures than usual. Although this seems disadvantageous at first glance, these months can be perfect for experienced surfers and kitesurfing enthusiasts looking for challenging waves. However, be cautious if you plan to go to the East Coast since it can get windier than other areas.

September – December

Dry season starts again in springtime as temperatures slowly rise into higher digits. And with better swimming conditions ahead, more people flock to the island, which also brings higher prices.

Tropical Tranquility: April & September (Shoulder Seasons)

To avoid crowds and expensive airfares, visit the country between April and September. While occasional brief showers might spoil your day occasionally, they usually don’t last long and won’t mess up your overall trip because the weather remains pleasant. Additionally, take advantage of competitive Mauritius tour packages, thanks to lower airfares and cheap accommodation.

Rainy Season: January to March

The island experiences cyclone season during these months. While cyclones don’t happen every day, you will likely get caught in heavy rain or strong wind during your stay. If you prioritise sunshine and outdoor activities over other factors, it’s best to avoid booking a trip during this period.

Here are additional things you can consider when finally making up your mind:

Festivals and Events

Mauritius hosts plenty of lively celebrations throughout the year that will touch your soul as they’re incredibly vibrant. You might want to participate in Diwali, Chinese New Year or Ganesh Chaturthi if you can schedule your trip accordingly. Do some research on upcoming events to make sure they fall into your target dates.

Your Interests

For instance, if water sports are what you’re most excited about, visit during July and August, when strong winds welcome surfers with open arms. Calmer waters between May and December are perfect for diving and snorkelling.

Budget

Between September and December is peak season, but everything is expensive, including airfares and accommodation. Sometimes, even a slight difference between seasons can lead to significantly lesser costs when arranging services like flights and accommodations through agencies, so try considering shoulder seasons or even rainy season (if occasional showers aren’t an annoyance) if budget is one of your main concerns.

Food & Lodging Options in Mauritius for Indian Travelers

Mauritius has colourful cuisine and many exciting places to stay. Some of the most luxurious resorts are built around the local culture, so you can enjoy the food and lodging while also experiencing the place you’re visiting. Mauritius offers a range of accommodations, from boutique hotels to all-inclusive resorts with meals, drinks, and activities.

Try some local food

The island is known for its spicy dholl puri (flatbread) and samosas, which make a killer snack between meals. Some of the things you must try include baked gateaux piment, farata, dim sums, coconut cakes, gajak, and Mauritian rum.

Seafood options

Mauritius knows how to cook it right. With fresh-caught fish perfectly grilled on many beaches, it’s a foodie paradise for all seafood lovers.

Vegetarian options

This country has many ways to satisfy your taste buds without meat if that’s what you prefer. Many dishes, like dal puri (flatbread stuffed with lentils) or vegetable curries, are perfect examples.

You can also taste the French influence with bread, pastries, cheeses, etc. So don’t forget to make time for breakfast at a cafe with a croissant and a cup of strong Mauritian coffee before heading out either.

Drink choices are very abundant here including some popular local beverages such as their famous rum if you’re looking for an evening drink after exploring all day. Or try their tea made from their varying kinds of tea leaves from across the globe.

Finding where to stay

Luxurious Resorts

Most resorts offer meal packages that cover breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and more. This is a great option if you want everything settled on one bill.

Boutique Hotels

Some people enjoy smaller, more intimate spaces when they travel, so you might want to consider this option.

Self-Catering Apartments

This option allows you to explore local markets and grocery stores while having a place to cook your purchase. If you’re on an extended trip, this might save you some cash, too.

Guesthouses

These places are often owned by locals and offer you the chance to get up close and personal with the culture there.

Eco-Lodges

Mauritius is also environmentally friendly, so if you consider it when travelling, this country has built eco-lodges across its landmasses for tourists.

Tips for Indian Travelers:

Dietary Requirements

Let whoever is serving you know if you require vegetarian or vegan meals. Many hotels and restaurants will make them for guests if they’ve been informed ahead of time.

Spice It Up

Mauritian cuisine can be mild compared to Indian food. So don’t hesitate to ask for extra chillies if they forget to add them or if they don’t live up to your spice standards.

Local Markets

You’ll find many fresh fruits, veggies, and spices. Pick up what looks good and cook it all back home in your self-catering apartment.

All-Inclusive vs A La Carte

Budget-minded travellers and foodies should consider what they’re willing to spend on their trip before deciding between these options.

A culinary melting pot with all the lodging options one could dream of, Mauritius prides itself in its ability to cater to anyone’s taste and budget. Follow these tips and find the perfect Mauritian haven for your exotic island adventure.
