Itinerary
El Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St James, is a famous and sacred pilgrimage that people have covered for over 1000 years. At GT Holidays, our Spain trip package itinerary covers all major destinations the pilgrimage covers.
Day 1: Madrid – La Rioja - Santo Domingo De La Calzada
Upon landing at Madrid Airport, you’ll drive to Logrono in the La Rioja region. Some notable places in Logrono include – the Church of Santa Maria de Palacio and the Municipal Pilgrim’s Hostel. Spend the night at the Parador Santo Domingo De La Calzada, a former 12-century hospital built by St. Dominic to treat pilgrims travelling on the Way of St James.
Day 2: Logrono - Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture
La Rioja is Spain’s famous and biggest wine region, producing over 300 million litres of wine every year. On Day 2, we’ll cover the famous wineries in the area, including the Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture, a museum managed by the Vivanco family, housing exquisite wine-related artefacts and artworks collected by the family over the years. The museum also houses wine-tasting rooms and restaurants where you can sample authentic local delicacies.
The tour also includes visiting the region's vineyards and the Suso and Yuso monasteries at San Millan de la Cogolla. Spend the night at a hotel in Logrono.
Day 3: Logrono - Burgos - Burgos Cathedral
After breakfast, we’ll leave for Burgos, one of Spain’s wealthiest cities and an important pilgrimage stop. The city was once the capital of the unified region of Castille and Leon and is famous for its iconic Gothic monuments, including Burgos Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Day 4: Burgos - Fromista – Leon
On the fourth day, you will be leaving Burgos to Carrion de Los Condes, where you will visit the Monastery of San Zoilo before moving to Fromista to admire the San Martin Church. We’ll then move on to Leon, a city structured as an open-air museum with dozens of structures, including the church of Saint Pedro, the Santa Ana, and the Church of the Mercado. You’ll spend the night at the Hostal de San Marcos, a historic Parador hotel built around the 16th century.
Day 5: Leon – Astorga – Ponferrada - Santiago De Compostela
On the fifth day, we’ll drive you to Santiago de Compostela, where the Way of St. James pilgrimage culminates. The city became famous as a symbol of the Spanish Christians’ struggle against Islam. Some places we’ll cover in and around Leon include Astorga – the Palace of Gaudi Astorga, La Catedral de Santa Maria de Astorga and Ponferrada – Los Templarios Castle, Santo Tomas de las Ollas Church, etc.
Day 6: Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, witness the magnificence of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where Saint James the Great was buried. The church was destroyed in the 10th century but was completely rebuilt in the following century. The church has Romasque, Gothic, and Baroque influences and is famous for its Portico de la Gloria, a Romanesque portico created around the 12th century.
Day 7: Depart from Santiago De Compostela
Check out from your hotel and head to the airport to board your flight back home.
